I was born in a small town outside of Shreveport, Louisiana 2 days after September 11th 2001. I came into the world pretty darn small since I was adopted at 6 weeks old and I was only 3 lbs. I was never told I was a runt, but I was the only puppy left in my litter….hmmm.
I have been told though, that I was a mistake, an impulse buy, a drug deal or the like. Mom had no intention of taking me home with her, but it was love at first sight. We met for the first time in a Super Kmart parking lot in Lufkin, Texas. Me and my sister Cookie were brought there together. We knew Cookie was going to a loving family, but I really had no future until SHE came along. Mom saw me and knew we had to be together. Somehow she used her plastic card to grow money out of a box and was able to take me home. As I sat in her lap on the way to Houston, I knew I was HOME.
From there it has been history…one trip after another. I flew for the first time when I was just 3 months old. That is when I met HIM for the first time and my dear friend Turbo. Turbo taught me that I must protect my mom from those evil squirrels – it is a lifelong endeavor! But I have purpose. HE taught me that I must share my mom – that is very difficult at times – but years of sharing have been good for me.
I have many friends in Texas where I usually live. Mom and I lived in University Green and there I met most of my buddies from Texas. As my nose grew, Mom called me her little Pinnochio. With my long nose I was able to push the tennis balls around like a seal and kick the ball around like a soccer player. I even know how to jump, flip and catch the ball in the air. That was great fun. I have one bad habit though I tear them to pieces and my teeth are wearing down because of it.
Every summer I go to Massachusetts to hang out with my cousins. Marching in the woods, swimming in the ocean, lying in the summer sun – it doesn’t get much better than that. We lost our dear leader, Coal, last year which has been very hard for Elsie and me. However we have adapted, but she is in memory and with us always. From Coal we learned to be nice to others, so we have let the cat, Thomas into our group.
As for my professional career – Well, I went to go to Florida to advise on the launch of the space shuttle Discovery when mom flew to space the first time in 2006. I went with mom to check out the new Astronaut Candidates for the class of 2009 when she was the Deputy Chief of the astronaut office. I even went to Russia – Star City to check out her training with the Russians for her next trip to space. In Russia, I came to know about Lika, the first dog the Russians sent into space. She never came back and that scared me. I have been busy, but managing.
When Mom was in space last time, I was her representative and had to appear on TV shows and in photo shoots all over the world to appease the public. This time, I plan on keeping a low profile and hanging out in Massachusetts. I know she will be home before long. So as we are both getting older, I plan on staying in good shape, taking her up on her challenges of no beer and working out. I want to be in my best shape ever for her return. We have the rest of our lives to live and we need to be in good health so we can live happily ever after.
